Book of the Month: The Giver

Updated: Nov 19

By: Lois Lowry

Recommended Grade 8+

"The Giver" by Lois Lowry follows the story of Jonas, an eleven-year-old boy living in a controlled society where emotions, colors, and choices are all but eradicated. Set in a future world devoid of pain and fear, everyone conforms to strict rules and routines to maintain a sense of sameness. At the pivotal Ceremony of Twelve, Jonas is selected as the Receiver of Memory, exposing him to the community’s buried history and emotions. Under the guidance of the Giver, his mentor, Jonas begins to unravel the mysteries of the past, discovering the richness of life suppressed in his world.

As Jonas delves deeper into his training, he experiences a profound awakening. The Giver imparts memories of joy, love, sadness, and beauty - emotions erased from the collective consciousness of their society. Shocked by the sterile existence enforced upon his community, Jonas becomes determined to challenge the status quo. His bond with the Giver grows stronger as he learns about the power of individuality and the consequences of a life devoid of genuine human experience. Jonas bravely escapes his strictly controlled society, journeying towards “Elsewhere” with baby Gabriel. They face perilous landscapes and daunting challenges that test their courage. Each step towards freedom represents Jonas’ quest for a new beginning where choices, emotions, and colors can flourish once more.

“The Giver” deeply explores themes of identity, freedom, and resilience, prompting readers to reflect on the complexities of a world balanced between utopia and dystopia. These themes will stimulate your intellect and keep you engaged. We highly recommend watching the movie after finishing the book.
