Service Description
This writing class will focus on preparing students to enter one or more categories of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. All students will also have the option to select other competitions to submit for, based on their interests. The instructor will help them through all steps of the process: brainstorming, notes, outline, rough draft, citations, and final draft. Students will complete at least a personal essay & memoir, a short story, and 2 poems throughout the summer. Our course is designed to impart writing and deep thinking skills that will stay with students beyond the final lesson. Therefore, this class also functions as a writing workshop for students whose goals may transcend this awards season and be focused on other competitions, college applications, or research journals. As students work to produce a unique piece of writing, they will also develop a unique sense of self and who they are as a writer. Writing Process 1. Students will understand the differences between writing styles and genres, including key features and language that make for strong submissions. 2. Students will practice all phases of the writing process from prewriting to self-editing to produce a strong product worthy of submission and publication. Deep Thinking 1. Students will engage in self-reflection and deep thinking to develop their unique voice as an author and authentic writing topics. They will learn how to find and express their uniqueness through the written word, a skill that is essential when responding to essay prompts and interview questions down the road. 2. Students will set goals for themselves and manage their own writing schedule. They will think deeply about their goals as a writer and find other competitions to submit to down the road.
