Service Description
This writing class will focus on preparing students to enter for one or more categories of the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Students will receive individual instruction and feedback from the teacher, while also being free to work on a creative product of their own design. They can choose from a wide variety of categories, including: Critical Essay Dramatic Script Humor Journalism Poetry Personal Essay Novel Writing Students will work on their writing skills, with the goal of creating a unique piece of writing which can be entered for a chance to win a Scholastic Award. Our course is designed to impart writing and deep thinking skills that will stay with students beyond the final lesson. Therefore, this class also functions as a writing workshop for students whose goals may transcend this awards season and be focused on other competitions, college applications, or research journals. As students work to produce a unique piece of writing, they will also develop a unique sense of self and who they are as a writer. Writing Skills 1. Students will understand that writing is an iterative process and how to remain open to feedback while advocating for their ideas. 2. Students will explore the various genres available in the Scholastic Awards by reading past winners, works of professional writers, and engaging in short-term assignments. Deep Thinking 1. Using a self-evaluation of strengths and areas of growth, students will develop personal goals related to the Scholastic Awards and other future plans. 2. Students will learn the reflective and deep thinking skills necessary to produce unique and impactful pieces of writing, whether personal or academic.
